Although Ad-Aware has you update definition files after installation, you will still need to manually perform future updates. It's best to update before each scan, to ensure that the latests threats are removed. Notice in the main window that Ad-Aware warns that an update may be needed. Click on "Check for updates now".

Simply click on the Connect button, answer OK when prompted, and Finish to close the dialog.



The Definitions file is now up to date, and Ad-Aware is ready to scan.

In order to perform a deep and thorough scan, some configuration changes need to be made before continuing. Along the top is a button with a gear; click this to open the Configuration Window.

If you are not already in the Scan Settings, clicking the Scanning button on the left will bring you to the correct page. The only option to enable on this page is Scan within archives.


To access the second page, click on the Advanced button on the left. Click on the four items with the red X beside them to enable them.


Now that all of our configuration changes have been made, click Proceed to save the changes and continue.

From the main window, click Start to initiate the scan.

Change the scan mode from Peform smart system scan to Use Custom scanning options. Also enable Search for low-risk threats.

Click Next and the scanning will start. This may take a few minutes to finish, depending on the speed of your computer. You will be alerted with a noise once the scan has completed.

The scan is now complete, and Ad-Aware has found a number of objects that are ready to be removed. Click the Next button.


Right-click within the whitespace to open the context menu. Choose Select All Objects.

Now that the objects are selected, click Next to continue.

Click OK and all threats will be removed.

Click on the button with the lock to open the Quarantine Manager.


Right click within the whitespace, and select Delete all Archives.

Click OK to confirm deletion.

You have successfully removed all traces of malware and spyware.
